On Sunday 26th August 2007 Wellington’s first ever professional football team took to Westpac Stadium and held A-League powerhouse the Melbourne Victory to a 2-2 draw. Featuring a swag of current All Whites and successful A-League coach Ernie Merrick, the Phoenix are ready to fly.
Since 2007 the Phoenix has broken records for attendances at a football match in New Zealand twice with sell out crowds for the LA Galaxy and David Beckham in 2007, and again in the finals playoffs against the Newcastle Jets in 2010. After the challenges of the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons, the team were back in the playoffs in 2014/15 and nothing less will satisfy the squad, management and fans in the 2015/16 Hyundai A-League season.
