Formed in 1955, the Counties Manukau provincial union has forged a proud tradition of winning teams and extraordinary athletes. From 1950s All Black legends such as Pat Walsh and Kevin Skinner to pro era stars such as Joeli Vidiri and the incomparable Jonah Lomu.

The Steelers have always played an attacking style of rugby and the 2012 ITM Cup saw a continuation of that under coach and All Black legend Tana Umaga. Promotion from the Championship to the Premiership was the reward as the Steelers outgunned the Otago Razorbacks 41-16 in front of 12,000 ecstatic home fans at ECOLight Stadium on October 26.
